Northwest Territories Financial Aid for Students with Disabilities

Pursuing higher education is a significant commitment, and for students with disabilities, navigating the financial landscape requires knowing where to find specialized support. In the Northwest Territories (NWT), a unique territorial program provides targeted aid, while national scholarships offer additional opportunities to fund your academic goals.

Northwest Territories Student Financial Assistance (SFA)

Unlike other provinces and territories, the Canada Student Loans and Grants program is not available in the NWT. Instead, the territorial government operates its own comprehensive Student Financial Assistance (SFA) program. This program is designed to help supplement the costs of post-secondary education for eligible NWT residents.

Key NWT Funding Programs for Students with Disabilities:

NWT Grants for Students with Permanent Disabilities:

  • up to $4,000 per academic year for assistance with tuition, books, travel and accommodation; and
  • up to $20,000 per academic year to assist with eligible expenses, such as a tutor, interpreter, special equipment, etc.
  • Course Reimbursement: Up to $880 per course; lifetime limit of $8,800

Learning Support for Persons with Disabilities Fund:

This separate fund provides financial assistance specifically for learning activities. It is open to NWT residents aged 18+ who are living with a disability, involved in a learning activity, and cannot secure funding elsewhere.
