About

My name is Chris. I just wanted to introduce myself and explain a little bit about my life and why I chose to start this project.

Born in Calgary, Alberta in 1981. I’ve been disabled my entire life with a type of Muscular Dystrophy called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. I have never walked, stood, or crawled. The doctor told my mother I wouldn’t live past a year. I just turned 44 this past October. I received my first powered wheelchair when I was three years old.

When I was 12 years old, my family and I moved to England for five years. We eventually moved back to Ontario in 1998. I graduated from high school in 2001. Then, I went onto college for 7 years. During that time, I earned diplomas in Advertising and Information Technology.

Now, I work for an assisted living company as their Social Media Manager. I also work at the Day Club once a week. There, I provide clients, who are physically disabled or have a brain injury, with games and activities. I absolutely love my job. I’m so blessed to have it.

Adaptive Sports

Before getting employment, I volunteered as the Commissioner of the Wheelchair Hockey League of Michigan. It is a competitive power wheelchair floor hockey league. I was Commissioner for 12 years, meeting many amazing people. I’m a big advocate for adaptive sports. I really believe it builds community and teaches teamwork. It develops social skills and connections to people who share similar lifestyles and barriers. I started playing wheelchair floor hockey when I was 9 years old and played for over 20 years. PowerHockey was a huge part of my life.

Life Experience

I have been very lucky to have traveled to many amazing places throughout my life. I have been exposed to many different life experiences and many unique people. I have met a lot of different people with various disabilities. I have experienced many accessibility and inclusion issues throughout my entire life.

Quest for Information

Wherever I go or wherever I live, there is a reoccurring problem. It’s that any information on accessibility or disability services are sometimes extremely difficult to find. At times, it’s almost as if they purposely hide information and don’t share it. People shouldn’t have to hunt for the accessibility information they need.

A perfect example is…. When I went to college in Ontario for 7 years completely FREE. All my books were paid for as well because I’m disabled. In the first year, I didn’t know there was funding available. I only found out through word of mouth. Situations like these are where the system is broken. Important information like this needs to be readily available and that’s why I built this website. I hope it provides you with valuable information that can make your life easier.

Portions of this website are affiliate links to products. If you buy a product from a link on this website, I will earn a commission. The commission is small. This does not affect the price of any of your purchases. However, it does help me earn some extra money. I put this money back into this project for hosting, domain and advertising costs. I truly do appreciate your support.
